With cosy fires, hearty homemade food, and charming bedrooms, the classically British, rural pub is the perfect place for a short break exploring the beautiful English countryside.
This time, we’re discussing our top picks for a rural escape in the sleepy county of Suffolk. Less than two hours from London, Suffolk is full of spectacular scenery, from its cutesy villages to its 60 miles of breathtaking heritage coast.
One of Suffolk’s most popular destinations, the market town of Bury St Edmunds is the ideal day trip. There are plenty of fabulous independent shops and restaurants perfect for a bit of retail therapy, as well as Suffolk’s only cathedral and England’s smallest pub, the Nutshell.
Travel 20 minutes west and you’ll find Newmarket, another of Suffolk’s best market towns, which just so happens to be the birthplace of thoroughbred racing. You can even get a behind-the-scenes tour of the National Stud – the only commercial stud farm in the UK that allows visitors.
If you’re looking for somewhere special to stay, The Northgate, located just a few moments walk from Bury St Edmunds’ iconic ancient Abbey in the town centre, provides 10 beautifully designed rooms, which offer a luxurious retreat after a busy day exploring.
Suffolk is also a great pick for art lovers, as a quintessentially English village and AONB Dedham was the inspiration behind many popular works by John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough. Walk through these iconic landscapes, and then follow it up with a trip to Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich, where you can see some of these paintings in the flesh.
With so much coastline to discover, it can be hard to know where to start. One of our top picks, though, has to be the town of Southwold. It’s home to a beautiful stretch of beach and some pretty winding streets, but it also boasts some unique gems. Firstly, there’s the weird and quirky pier, with arcade games you simply won’t find anywhere else. Southwold is also home to popular brewers Adnams, and it’s here where you can enjoy a wonderful tour of the brewery and distillery – and buy some to take home too! After all the fresh sea air, why not retreat to a beautifully simple Ferry Road Houses, with panoramic views of the marshes and harbour, it’s the ideal beachside location to relax and watch the sunset.
If you’re looking for something more rural, then Molletts Farm offers the perfect solution. With breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, Molletts Farm is a perfect spot for nature lovers. Visitors can enjoy long walks in the countryside, bird-watching at RSPB Minsmere, or simply admire the stunning scenery from their accommodation. With plenty of outdoor space for children to play and explore, Molletts Farm is the perfect place for families too. Children will love the chance to see and interact with farm animals, while parents can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
